LinkedIn can sometimes feel like the not-so-popular friend or the boring cousin of Facebook and Twitter. But recognize that it keeps a low profile due to the professional nature of its users. The truth is, LinkedIn is not be underestimated because job seekers, recruiters, brands and industries all use it. This social media platform can connect you with powerful mentors and potential bosses, and can be a place to share your content, AND be a B2B marketer’s BFF.
About 225,000,000 people are using this social media platform daily, which has made it the world’s largest professional network. LinkedIn currently has 187 million monthly users, 2.1 million LinkedIn groups and 3 million LinkedIn business pages. Those figures certainly put the power of LinkedIn in context. But how do you connect to other LinkedIn members and influential movers and shakers? Below are some tips on how to get the most out of your LinkedIn account and double your connections:
1) Update your status daily. 42% of LinkedIn users update on a regular basis. This can easily by done by posting a blog or article each day that pertains to your industry.
2) Start a weekly discussion group on LinkedIn or participate in one that relates to your area of interest.
3) Join specific LinkedIn groups (3-5) and make sure you stay active on each one.
4) Follow certain influencers on LinkedIn and answer any questions on their posts.
5) Make sure your contact information is displayed so people know how to get in touch with you.
6) When sending a new invite on LinkedIn, be sure to personalize it and avoid using the standard default request for an invite. Personalizing it will help you to stand out, but keep it short since there isn’t a lot of room. Aim to send one new invitation daily.
7) To promote your LinkedIn profile, include it on all your emails, website, blogs, business cards, marketing material, etc. You can add links to your profile on your website/blog to build credibility. Upon meeting someone new, mention your LinkedIn profile and encourage them to connect with you.
8) Endorse people you know for their skills. LinkedIn has more than one billion endorsements. Do not endorse someone with the expectation that they will endorse you back. If they do endorse you back, make sure to send a personal thank you message.
9) Be sure and use Twitter as much as possible to tweet any of your LinkedIn updates.
